MEL Adviser (Maternity Cover)
Full-time (37.5 hours per week), fixed-term (Maternity Cover). Part-time will be considered (3 days per week).

Saferworld is seeking to recruit a Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL) Adviser on a fixed-term contract to cover a period of maternity leave. The role is full-time at 37.5 hours per week, and we will also consider applications on a part-time basis of 3 days per week. This is an opportunity for an experienced MEL professional to bring technical expertise to an independent international organisation working to prevent violent conflict and build safer lives, and to help shape how evidence drives our programmes and partnerships in complex and conflict-affected contexts.

The Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL) Adviser provides technical leadership and practical support to strengthen monitoring, evaluation and evidence generation across Saferworld's programmes and partnerships. Working closely with country leads/teams, thematic advisers, and civil society partners, the post-holder supports the design and implementation of robust MEL systems and processes that enable programmes to measure progress, demonstrate results, meet accountability commitments and generate high-quality evidence for learning on the effectiveness of Saferworld's conflict prevention and peacebuilding.

The MEL Adviser provides technical advice on programme design, theories of change, results frameworks, indicators, monitoring approaches and evaluations, ensuring that MEL systems are appropriate to complex and conflict-affected contexts and aligned with organisational principles and standards and donor requirements. The role supports programme teams and partners to collect, analyse and use evidence effectively, strengthens MEL capacity across the organisation, and contributes to high-quality donor reporting and accountability.

The post-holder also facilitates reflection and learning processes that help teams interpret evidence and adapt their work, while contributing to the continuous improvement of Saferworld's MEL approaches, tools and practices. The role works collaboratively across the organisation to foster a culture of evidence-informed decision-making, adaptive programming and mutual learning.

Distinct from the Learning Adviser role, which focuses on strengthening how Saferworld learns, adapts and applies evidence across the organisation, the MEL Adviser focuses on generating, assessing and assuring the quality of evidence through monitoring, evaluation and results measurement systems. Together, these roles form a complementary and integrated evidence, learning and adaptation function that supports organisational effectiveness, accountability and impact. Therefore, the MEL Advisor will work collaboratively with the Learning Advisor to ensure coherence across the MEL function.

Saferworld is an international organisation dedicated to conflict prevention and peacebuilding programming, policy and practice. We collaborate with institutions and work directly with partners across Africa, Asia, the Middle East and Europe to tackle diverse factors that drive violent conflict, injustice and insecurity. We participate in major global policy debates on peace, justice and security to influence change.

For more information about Saferworld as an organisation, our commitment to diversity and inclusion, safeguarding, interview process or staff benefits, please refer to our website or jobs page.

Saferworld stands in solidarity with people affected by violence and conflict across the world. Uniting with diverse and expert partner organisations, we make peace possible – through a blend of community-level work and global advocacy.

Between 2017–21, we have worked with over 100 partners in Asia, Africa and the Middle East. We supported 1066 action plans developed by 256 community groups and 183 civil society organisations. Initiated and implemented by communities, these action plans unite people from different sectors of society, as they work together to improve safety in people’s daily lives and create long-term sustainable change

A just and peaceful world, in which everyone enjoys the rights and freedom to live and thrive with dignity, free from fear and insecurity. We work in solidarity with communities, civil society and partners to prevent and transform violent conflict, advocate for peace and social justice, and build safer lives.

We believe there are essential conditions necessary for peace to become the norm. We work to create environments where the following three ‘peace conditions’ are in place:

  • People have the freedom and resources to work together to transform conflict and hold authorities to account.
  • People have access to fair and effective paths to address the grievances and inequalities that drive conflict.
  • People and institutions with influence use their power and resources to promote justice, peace and equality for all.

We value and embrace the differences and multiple identities implied in the word ‘people’, and know that peace can only be achieved and sustained by removing structural inequality in all its forms.

Our integrity as an organisation comes from the values and principles that guide our work.

We listen to and learn from the perspectives of the diverse cultures and communities represented among our staff, our partners and others who we work with around the world. Our unique differences – in age, gender, ethnicity, religion, disability, sexual orientation, education, national origin or opportunity – make us who we are. We embrace everyone’s unique background and identity without prejudice or bias, knowing that this enriches our environment and the effectiveness of our work.

Saferworld strives to be a place where everyone feels comfortable, included and valued, where difference is respected and where every person has an equal and full opportunity to make a difference through their work. We know that our partners and staff are our greatest assets. As people and as an institution we are committed to creativity, learning and reflection.

Solidarity: we act in solidarity with others working collaboratively for positive change. We commit to playing our part in confronting discriminatory attitudes, biases and ‘colonial’ mindsets where they exist in the systems and processes we engage with, including within the international development sector.

We believe that our actions must be transparent and consistent with our principles and mission both inside and outside of the workplace.

We may hold positions of power in relation to people we work or engage with, including colleagues and those we work with. We are aware of the responsibility that comes with this and are respectful and honest in our work.

We recognise that imbalances of power in the humanitarian and development sectors have led, and continue to lead, to many forms of exploitation and abuse. Providing a safe and trusted environment that safeguards our staff, partners and programme participants is a priority for Saferworld.

Our interview process involves 4 main stages:

  • Application
  • 1-hour video call with Hiring Manager, one other team member and people team member
  • Final Interview and task with two members of the team

Our average process takes around 2-3 weeks, but we will always work around your availability. You will have the chance to speak to our recruitment team at various points during your process. If you have any specific questions ahead of this, please contact us on people@saferworld.org.uk

We’re committed to being an inclusive employer and creating a fair workplace for all. We encourage applications from candidates across all backgrounds, circumstances, ages, disabilities, ethnicities, religions or beliefs, gender identities, or sexual orientations.

Research shows that women and those from marginalized ethnic groups are less likely to apply to jobs, unless they meet every single requirement. If you’re excited about this role, but your experience doesn’t align with every criteria described, we encourage you to apply.

We're happy to offer reasonable adjustments during our hiring process. Just let us know, and we'll make it work for you. Your comfort and success matter to us!
