The Vacancy
Learning Advisor (Maternity Cover)
Full-time (37.5 hours per week), fixed-term for 12 months (Maternity Cover). Part-time will be considered.
Saferworld is seeking to recruit a Learning Advisor on a 12-month fixed-term contract to cover a period of maternity leave, starting as soon as possible. The role is full-time at 37.5 hours per week, and we will also consider applications on a part-time basis. The post can be based in London, Nairobi, Kampala or Bishkek, and other locations will be considered in countries where Saferworld has a presence. This is an opportunity for an experienced learning and knowledge management professional to help an independent international organisation working to prevent violent conflict turn evidence and experience into better decisions, stronger partnerships and lasting peacebuilding outcomes.
The Learning Advisor leads Saferworld's efforts to strengthen organisational learning, adaptive programming and decision-making, reflection processes, and knowledge use across programmes (geographic and thematic), policy, advocacy, and advisory work, in countries we work in and globally. The role supports teams and partners to generate, capture, analyse and apply learning from practice and evidence to improve approaches to support locally led peacebuilding responses, programme and organisational effectiveness, and influencing strategies.
Working closely with the MEL colleagues and teams across the organisation, the Learning Advisor focuses on ensuring that evidence is translated into actionable insights, learning is systematically embedded into decision-making, and cross-organisational knowledge is shared and used to strengthen peacebuilding outcomes. The post-holder helps foster a culture of critical reflection, collaboration and continuous learning, improvement, and adaptation across Saferworld's programmes and partnerships.
Distinct from the MEL Advisor role, which focuses on generating and assuring the quality of evidence through monitoring, evaluation and results systems, the Learning Advisor focuses primarily on connecting learning and evidence to strengthen its work in partnership and influencing. Together, these roles form a complementary and integrated evidence, learning and adaptation function that supports organisational effectiveness, accountability and impact. Therefore, the Learning Advisor will work collaboratively with the MEL Advisor to ensure coherence across the MEL function.

The Benefits
Who we are
Saferworld stands in solidarity with people affected by violence and conflict across the world. Uniting with diverse and expert partner organisations, we make peace possible – through a blend of community-level work and global advocacy.
Between 2017–21, we have worked with over 100 partners in Asia, Africa and the Middle East. We supported 1066 action plans developed by 256 community groups and 183 civil society organisations. Initiated and implemented by communities, these action plans unite people from different sectors of society, as they work together to improve safety in people’s daily lives and create long-term sustainable change
A just and peaceful world, in which everyone enjoys the rights and freedom to live and thrive with dignity, free from fear and insecurity. We work in solidarity with communities, civil society and partners to prevent and transform violent conflict, advocate for peace and social justice, and build safer lives.
We believe there are essential conditions necessary for peace to become the norm. We work to create environments where the following three ‘peace conditions’ are in place:
Why Join Us?
We value and embrace the differences and multiple identities implied in the word ‘people’, and know that peace can only be achieved and sustained by removing structural inequality in all its forms.
Our integrity as an organisation comes from the values and principles that guide our work.
We listen to and learn from the perspectives of the diverse cultures and communities represented among our staff, our partners and others who we work with around the world. Our unique differences – in age, gender, ethnicity, religion, disability, sexual orientation, education, national origin or opportunity – make us who we are. We embrace everyone’s unique background and identity without prejudice or bias, knowing that this enriches our environment and the effectiveness of our work.
Saferworld strives to be a place where everyone feels comfortable, included and valued, where difference is respected and where every person has an equal and full opportunity to make a difference through their work. We know that our partners and staff are our greatest assets. As people and as an institution we are committed to creativity, learning and reflection.
Solidarity: we act in solidarity with others working collaboratively for positive change. We commit to playing our part in confronting discriminatory attitudes, biases and ‘colonial’ mindsets where they exist in the systems and processes we engage with, including within the international development sector.
We believe that our actions must be transparent and consistent with our principles and mission both inside and outside of the workplace.
We may hold positions of power in relation to people we work or engage with, including colleagues and those we work with. We are aware of the responsibility that comes with this and are respectful and honest in our work.
We recognise that imbalances of power in the humanitarian and development sectors have led, and continue to lead, to many forms of exploitation and abuse. Providing a safe and trusted environment that safeguards our staff, partners and programme participants is a priority for Saferworld.
